About ESK
Welcome to Eastern Shore Karate, a not-for-profit branch of the International Shotokan Karate Federation. We are excited to bring the world’s most popular karate style to the Eastern Shore. Our classes will be taught by Louis Staple & Theresa Graham, who have a combined 40+ years of martial arts experience, including teaching youth classes in Halifax.
What is Shotokan Karate?
Shotokan Karate is a traditional Japanese martial art, rooted in Okinawan karate and popularized by Gichin Funakoshi, that pairs practical self-defence with character development. Training blends kihon (fundamentals), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring) to build power, precision, timing, and balance. Hallmarks include strong techniques, deep stable stances, and disciplined, step-by-step progression. Students of all ages improve fitness, flexibility, coordination, and confidence while learning respect, focus, and perseverance. Whether your goal is health, self-defence, or personal growth, Shotokan Karate provides a clear, supportive pathway from beginner to black belt.
What Will You Get From Karate?
As a beginner in Shotokan Karate, you will enter a structured martial arts program that develops the body and mind together. Training builds whole-body strength, mobility, balance, and coordination while improving posture, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness. You will learn efficient striking mechanics, stance and footwork, blocking and evasion, distancing and timing, and the fundamentals of practical self-defence within a safe, progressive curriculum.
Equally important are the mental benefits: focused attention, discipline, stress management, resilience, and confidence earned through clear milestones and belt examinations. Guided by qualified instructors and a culture of respect and etiquette, Shotokan Karate provides a reliable pathway from first class to black belt, helping you become stronger, calmer, and more capable in everyday life.
Expectations in Class
Karate is known for discipline and respect, and we bring those principles into our dojo in a positive, supportive way. Students are expected to listen politely to instruction, ask appropriate questions when they need help, and participate meaningfully in class. Dojo etiquette—such as how we bow in, what to do if a student arrives late, and how to show respect to training partners—will be explained and reinforced as students learn. If a student is having difficulty meeting these expectations, they may be asked to sit out for a short time to regroup, and if challenges continue, we will connect with caregivers to discuss how best to support them. Sometimes children simply need a little more time before they are ready to return to training, and we fully understand that kids grow and mature at different paces.
What is the ISKF?
The International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF) is a global organization dedicated to preserving high standards in traditional karate through a standardized curriculum, internationally certified instructors, and recognized rank examinations, seminars, and tournaments. Our school is affiliated through Halifax ISKF, led by Senseis Tony Tam and Danny Tam—both 8th-degree black belts and national leaders in Canadian karate—who support our training, help facilitate belt promotions, and connect students to world-class instruction and opportunities.
How Much Does Karate Cost?
In our dojo, instruction is free, and our instructors are volunteers. This was a deliberate choice to make karate accessible to all who want to participate on the Eastern Shore. We are operating out of the Old Schoolhouse, however, and we will be raising a collection at each class to “pay what you can”: all of the proceeds of these collections go directly to the Old Schoolhouse. There is absolutely no obligation or expectation to pay any amount: we want everyone who wants to participate to have that opportunity.
There may be costs associated with obtaining a gi and belt if students would like to begin advancing to the next kyu (belt level) as they participate. Gradings will take place in Halifax on a semi regular basis, and there may be costs associated with that process as well.
Should students have any difficulty with these costs, please reach out to us directly, as we are dedicated to making this accessible to all who wish to participate.
