Kyu Grading Curriculum

(9th kyu–Shodan)

This section outlines the grading curriculum for students progressing from 9th kyu to 1st kyu in ISKF Shotokan Karate. Each grading level includes a list of the required techniques, along with a video link to the kata students will perform at that level. Click on the curriculum for your grade to review the material and help guide your training.

It is important to remember that grading is dynamic. While the curriculum provides the core requirements, the Sensei may adjust the grading or ask additional techniques during the examination to better assess a student’s understanding, spirit, and overall development.

At Eastern Shore Karate, our students perform their gradings alongside the larger dojo at Halifax ISKF. This gives students the opportunity to train and test in a larger karate community and demonstrate what they have been learning in class.

A typical grading consists of four main components:

Kihon (Basics)
Students demonstrate fundamental techniques such as punches, blocks, kicks, and stances. Kihon tests technical accuracy, strength, balance, and control.

Kumite (Sparring)
Students perform partner drills or sparring appropriate to their level. This may range from three-step sparring (sanbon kumite) for beginners to more dynamic or free sparring (jiyu kumite) at higher levels.

Kata
Students perform a formal kata appropriate to their grade. Kata demonstrates coordination, timing, power generation, and understanding of karate movement.

Attitude and Etiquette
Karate is not only about technique but also about character and spirit. Students are evaluated on the energy, focus, respect, and discipline they bring to the dojo and to the grading itself.
